CAGED Conversion Therapy

The CAGED system has earned its place as an accessible starting point for guitarists.
It’s helpful for things like chasing chord shapes up the neck—especially in jazz comping or improvisation contexts.

But after teaching over 20,000 private guitar lessons, here’s what I’ve seen time and time again:

CAGED can become a crutch.

It gives players quick access to the fretboard without truly understanding what they’re playing.

For example:

• Many CAGED shapes don’t contain full triads
• Chord tones are often out of sequence (1–5–3 instead of 1–3–5)
• You end up guessing: “Is this a G shape with an open B string, or a fretted one?”
• “I’m playing a D chord using a C shape—so… is this a C or a D? Wait… what?”
